Every good sermon or teaching always carries an action point, something to do, reflect on, or change in our lives.
Think about it for a moment: the last sermon you listened to, whether in church or online, what was your take-home? What truth stood out to you?
And the last time you read the Word of God on your own, what was your biggest highlight? What did you sense the Holy Spirit drawing your attention to?
Jesus emphasized the importance of not just hearing God’s Word, but also acting on it. He said:
“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”
Matthew 7:24–27
In other words, every time we hear God’s Word but fail to act on it, we’re building on sand. It may look fine for a while, but when the storms of life come, challenges, temptations, disappointments, we’ll be shaken, and sometimes even fall apart.
However, when we listen intently to God’s voice, whether He speaks through His Word, through a sermon, or through the quiet conviction of the Holy Spirit, and then apply what we’ve heard, we’re building on a firm, unshakable foundation.
Jesus said,
“If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31–32
That means true discipleship is not just about hearing or knowing the Word, but about living it out daily.
So may this be an encouragement to you today:
Be intentional about listening keenly to God’s voice. Take note of what He impresses on your heart, and ask for the grace and strength to act on it.
As James reminds us,
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22
God bless you, and may He grant you the clarity to hear His voice clearly, and the strength to obey Him faithfully, so that your life may be firmly established on the Rock, Jesus Christ.
