Recently, our cat picked up a peculiar habit. It stopped spending time around the house like it used to. Instead, it began a new routine, leaving for long periods and only returning when it was hungry. Usually, we’d hear it crying at the door either late at night before bed or early in the morning around 6 AM when it sensed we were awake. The moment we opened the door, it would head straight to its feeding tray, eat, and then vanish again, often for a day or two.
It became so consistent that my husband jokingly nicknamed it the “day scholar cat”, like a student who only shows up at school for lessons and quickly disappears when class is over.
As amusing as it was, it also made me reflect deeply.
How often do we treat God the same way?
We go about our lives busy, distracted, self-reliant, until we hit a need. Then we come running to Him, crying out for help or provision. And once we’ve gotten what we came for, we retreat again, only to reappear when another crisis or hunger strikes.
But God is not just a provider. He is our Father, our friend, and the lover of our souls. He desires a relationship with us, not just requests from us. He wants us to seek His face, not only His hand.
So here’s a gentle encouragement: let’s not be “day scholar” believers. Let’s not limit our time with God to moments of need. Instead, let’s create space daily to simply be with Him, not because we need a miracle, but because we want to know Him more.
Bible Verse:
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)
Let’s be those who seek God wholeheartedly not just when we’re hungry, but every day, in every season.
