Every day, whether we realize it or not, we leave a mark on the people around us. Our words, actions, and even our silence have the power to shape hearts, shift perspectives, and inspire change.
This week in the One Another devotion with Pastor James Okumu, we’ve been learning about influence, how those around us influence us knowingly or unknowingly, and how, in turn, we influence them. It’s a reminder that none of us lives in isolation; our lives are constantly speaking to others.
Since Wednesday, I’ve been reflecting deeply on this truth as I’ve watched the nation mourn the late Raila Odinga. I’ve always known that his supporters deeply loved him, but witnessing people’s reactions, tears streaming down their faces, heartfelt tributes online, and emotions running high, has been both moving and sobering. Many have mourned him with the same intensity one would reserve for a close friend or family member. It’s undeniable evidence of the profound influence he had on countless lives.
Moments like these invite us to pause and reflect. How do we influence those around us? Through our actions, our words, our values, and even the quiet convictions that guide our decisions. Our influence may never make headlines, but it can transform hearts, starting with the people right next to us.
Jesus calls us to this very life of influence. He said we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Our lives should radiate goodness, love, and truth in such a way that others see our good deeds and give glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:13–16).
So, as we remember the life and legacy of a man who influenced many, may it also stir something within us, to live intentionally, to shine brightly, and to leave behind a trail of grace wherever we go.
My prayer is that God will help you and me to be a positive influence and a blessing to everyone we meet. May our lives reflect His light and draw others closer to Him.
