I recently came across a short clip that left me both amused and inspired. In the video, soldiers who had dozed off were suddenly commanded with the words “At ease!” The surprising part? No matter how deeply they were asleep, each one instantly jumped to his feet and stood at ease. Their response was automatic, proof of consistent training and discipline. Their bodies had been conditioned to react without hesitation, because as soldiers, they never know when the enemy might strike.
That moment made me reflect: as believers, we often refer to ourselves as soldiers in the Kingdom of God. In fact, we frequently sing, “I’m a soldier in the army, I’m a soldier in the army of the Lord.” But the question is, how ready and prepared are we? If the enemy were to knock at your door today, would you have any defense in place, or would you be caught off guard?
The Bible warns us that the devil doesn’t play games. His mission is clear: to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). That’s why we’re instructed in Ephesians 6 to put on the full armor of God. In a real battle, no soldier goes to war to simply spectate. Even those who cook, clean, or handle supplies are trained, because when the enemy strikes, he does not discriminate.
In the same way, every believer must be equipped. This isn’t the time for half hearted Christianity or casual faith. We need to be vigilant, especially when it comes to the basics, reading the Bible and prayer. These may seem simple, but they are the essentials that strengthen us, sharpen our discernment, and keep us connected to our Commander.
The truth is, when an attack comes, there is no time to start preparing. Your response will only be as strong as your readiness. Your defense in that moment depends on how faithfully you’ve trained beforehand.
So, let this be your encouragement: don’t wait for the enemy’s strike to take your place as a soldier. Stay battle-ready every day. Keep your heart connected to God. Let Him speak to you, and speak back to Him in prayer. In doing so, you’ll not only withstand the attack, you’ll walk in victory.
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11 (ESV)
